A new double CD collection through Next Music will be released prior to St Patrick's Day, 2010. It is entitled "Waldorf String Band In A Celtic Celebration", with The Clancy Bros & Tommy Makem, The Corries, The Dubliners, Foster & Allen, The Fureys, Noel McLoughlin and Planxty.
Waldorf String Band was formed in 1987 and quickly established itself as South Africa's premier Folk & Celtic Music Band, having been compared favourably with the Chieftains, and the Dubliners, with regular TV and Festival Appearances.
Today's line-up still retains its rich Celtic folk flavours, with Rael Birns (Guitar, Vocals and Mouth Organ) and John Gnodde (Banjo, Guitar and Vocals); together with Nippy Cripwell (String Bass); Jimmy Smyth (Flute, Piccolo and Vocals); Alan Strang (Guitar and Vocals), and special guest Steve Hall (Banjo, Mandolin, and Vocals).
Waldorf String Band started their recording career in 1990 and by 2008 had released eight CDs and three DVDs including an annual release of their ‘Spirit of Christmas' CD featuring well-known traditional Christmas Carols.
In 2004, Waldorf String Band had enormous success with their ‘Singalong Party' CD, which took Gallo Record Company and the dealers by surprise, outselling the ‘boy bands' for some time, and by 2009 was on the verge of going ‘gold' with sales of almost 20,000.
“Great fun was had compiling this pair of CDs, which in my mind ended up as a fictitious live concert, featuring the ‘greats' of Celtic music, irrespective of their individual time frames over the past 50 years or so.
Similarly it was an absolute pleasure being asked to include some of the most popular Waldorf String Band recordings made over the past 23 years and as a bonus, we recorded three new tracks, just for this compilation – ‘I Will Love You', ‘Step It Out Mary' and ‘Danny Boy'. "
